21-årige Ben Sullivan, ordförande för anrika debattsällskapet Oxford Union, anklagades för våldtäkt och sexuell kränkning. Han namngavs och häxjakten på hans liv började, namnet på kvinnorna som anklagade honom för våldtäkt har ej offentliggjorts.
Nu har det framkommit att en av de kvinnorna som anklagade Ben för våldtäkt visste om att hennes anklagelser var falska. Den incident som ett år senare förvandlades till våldtäkt var helt enkelt fyllesex med två villiga deltagare.
I en konversation mellan kvinnan och Ben på Facebook sägs bland annat följande:
Discussing on Facebook rumours that she was raped by Mr Sullivan after an event in January 2013, the alleged victim reassured the Union President: “If we ignore it, it’ll go away.”
Mr Sullivan replied: “People are going around accusing me of rape… How on earth could this have happened? I can’t really just ignore people accusing me of a felony I obviously did not commit.”
The student, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “When I got back to [my college] there were a bunch of people who’d been on [an event] outside the bar.
“I was drunk, crying and half dressed, no one knew that I’d just got back together with my boyfriend – that’s how people got the wrong idea.
“The next day I told everyone that was not what had happened, people just assumed – and a few girls decided that I was traumatised and suffering from victim guilt, which is ridiculous.
“My boyfriend didn’t find out until someone told him at the end of trinity. He then broke up with me. You can’t seriously think I would want that. I’m trying to ignore it because I still feel so, so guilty about cheating on him.”
When asked whether she believed the rumours were true, she added: “I know it must be absolutely awful for you but it’s not something I wanted people to find out – being known as a cheat is not fun. And no, of course they’re not. I was far too drunk, that’s it.”
Seeking the alleged victim’s help, Mr Sullivan replied again: “I will tell them its obviously not true and to ask you about it if they don’t believe me? Is that ok?”
“That’s so, so fine,” the alleged victim responded.
En debatt liknande den som förs i Sverige angående sex har nu drabbat Storbritannien, samtycke är inte alltid ett ja och sex kan vara våldtäkt.
Många organisationer som arbetar med våldtäktsoffer är kritiska till att polisen lagt ned anmälningarna mot Ben Sullivan eftersom man anser att det drabbar alla kvinnor som våldtas.
Man är även kritisk till att bland annat Facebook konversationen har offentliggjorts, för den ger Ben Sullivan material för sitt försvar. (!) Att Facebook konversationen klart visar att kvinnan är medveten om att det inte var våldtäkt verkar inte vara viktigt att offentliggöra för att visa varför förundersökningen lades ned.
Att anklagelserna inte i ett fall var ärliga och sanna verkar inte vara viktigt. Det är som om att bara för att Ben Sullivan anklagats för våldtäkt och sexuell kränkning så måste det gå till ett åtal och rättegång, oavsett vad polisens förundersökning kommer fram till.
A spokeswoman for Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre said there was ”no justification for exceptional treatment for rape defendants”.
She said: ”We are concerned that singling out rape and sexual offences for defendant anonymity serves only to entrench a myth that women who report these crimes are more likely to be lying than someone who is reporting another kind of crime.
”Research from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) published last year dismissed this myth, reporting that false rape allegations are ‘very rare’ and possibly make up as little as 1% of all reports.”
Sarah Pine, who organised a campaign to boycott the union, said her actions had been appropriate.
”We never broke the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’. I have never passed judgement on Ben’s case and never will,” she said.
She claimed the boycott sent a ”respectful message to any survivors of sexual violence”.
Polisen har sagt följande angående att förundersökningen lades ned.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: ‘All of the evidence was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for them to make a decision about charging and they decided against.’

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said: ‘We have decided that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute a 21-year-old man from Oxford who was arrested following a complaint of rape and a complaint of attempted rape made by two women. We will be writing to the complainants to explain our decision in more detail.’
När anklagelserna mot Ben Sullivan offentliggjordes, med hans namn, så höjdes röster att han skulle avgå eller få sparken från det anrika debattsällskapet Oxford Union.
Den som gick hårdast och mest brutalt fram i sina krav var Sarah Pine, Ordförande för Women at the Oxford University Student Union. Genom sin kampanj att få bort Ben Sullivan så kontaktade Sarah och hennes medhjälpare alla inbjudna gästtalare till debattsällskapet Oxford Union och bad dem att ställa in om inte Ben avsade sig sitt ordförandeskap. Många gjorde det men det finns en inbjuden person som vägrade.
Professor A.C. Grayling, however, refused to join the boycott, saying Ben had been subjected to a ‘kangaroo court of opinion’.
En intressant detalj är att de inbjudna gästtalarna ombads att stödja kraven på att Ben Sullivan skulle avgå. Enligt MailOnline så uttalades önskan om stöd enligt nedan:
Intriguingly, they were urged to support the call for Ben to stand down in what they described as a ‘push for equality’.
En knuff för jämställdhet.
Vad har det med anklagelserna om våldtäkt och sexuell kränkning som riktades mot Ben Sullivan och vad hade det att göra med debattsällskapet Oxford Union ?
Vad en Oxford student sa till MailOnline ger en inblick i vad som egentligen låg bakom allt:
‘While the majority of students, Ben among them, abhor sexual violence against women, many in the college believe he has been the target of a feminist crusade.’
Om det inte var ett feministiskt korståg, varför ombads de inbjudna gästtalarna att stödja kravet på Bens avgång ? Kravet som beskrevs som en knuff för jämställdhet.
Vad som är intressant är att Ben Sullivan inte längre är ordförande för debattsällskapet, inte för att han har avgått på grund av vad som har hänt, hans tid som ordförande är helt enkelt över. Ordförande väljs per termin/läsår om jag har uppfattat informationen på debattsällskapets hemsida rätt.
Presidents and Officers are elected termly by ballot of the entire membership, which continues (in most cases) for life.
Så om nu Sarah Pine & Co vill ha en knuff för jämställdhet gällande ordförandeposten för det anrika debattsällskapet, då måste man påverka alla medlemmar i debattsällskapet som röstar fram bland annat ordföranden. Undrar just hur hennes pittbulltaktik fungerar i att övertyga medlemmarna att rösta fram ”rätt” person till ordförandeposten.
Hur man lyckas eller misslyckas med det återstår att se.
Vad jag kan säga är att kräva en knuff för jämställdhet är en mycket dåligt maskerat krav på kvotering till ordförandeposten i debattsällskapet som går tillbaka till 1823.
Vad gäller Sarah Pine så har flera skribenter, journalister och kolumnister reagerat på hennes rabiata och hatiska kampanj att få bort Ben Sullivan.

Innocent until proven guilty is one of the great, unshakeable tenets that underpins our society. It is not up to a pack of she-furies hell-bent on vengeance to decide otherwise.Sometimes terrible things are done in the name of equality, and rounding on an individual on the basis of an allegation is one of those instances. Depriving anyone — yes, even a man accused of rape — of his fundamental rights is not a step forward for equality — it is the complete antithesis of equality.

It is not an understatement to say that during those five weeks Mr Sullivan was subjected to a ruthless witch-hunt headed by Sarah Pine, President for Women at Oxford University Student Union.
Ms Pine organised a boycott of the Oxford Union by speakers, and called for the President to ‘step aside’ while still under investigation.

Clearly now, Ms Pine should consider her own position and explain why she thought it necessary to subject Mr Sullivan to such a character annihilation.

There were some sensible speakers. Jennifer Perry, CEO of the Digital Trust and author of the UK guidelines on digital risks, previously spoke of how she felt “threatened” and “intimidated” by the boycott organised by Ms Pine.Ms Perry, who spoke at an event on May 27, titled ‘Stalking and Digital Abuse Awareness’, denounced the boycott campaign as “wholly inappropriate” and said that Ms Pine had ”pressurised” her to withdraw. So much for innocent until proven guilty.

But Ms Pine acted as judge, juror and executioner in this case, by pre-judging the allegation. She clearly has no idea of even a base line notion of fairness or indeed due process. It seems you do not have to be an Islamic extremist to be unfamiliar with this most basic principle.
När det gäller offentliggörandet av Bens namn i samband med att polisen plockade in honom på förhör så säger Ben följande till MailOnline:
‘But an individual’s identity should not automatically be revealed the minute they are arrested. There needs to be some happy medium where their identity is protected initially, until at least the conclusion of an investigation.
‘Police investigations may sometimes need people’s identities to be revealed so that witnesses come forward. But these were utterly poisonous allegations against me.
‘They were completely spurious, yet this was enough for an arrest. In cases like mine, everyone should have the right to anonymity as the inquiry is at a preliminary stage. The police and CPS should then be able to go to a judge and ask for the anonymity be waived, if they need it.
‘I understand why naming people is useful – naming Jimmy Savile obviously had a huge impact in getting people to come forward. But when inquiries are at such an early stage it is vicious, and it can be at a huge cost.’
Gällande sin upplevelse av anklagelserna, att vara namngiven i samband med anklagelser om våldtäkt och sexuell kränkning säger Ben följande:
”Seeing my reputation trashed has been sobering and painful. My whole life has been rifled through and examined. It has been utterly draining.”
”These poisonous allegations have made me re-evaluate everything. It has been very testing. I wondered how anyone could believe something so vile. I wondered how I was going to withstand all the poison.
”But did I ever have a moment of self-doubt? Did I ever think ‘Am I sure I remember exactly what happened?’ No, never. Not once. Yes, I had sex with the girl who claimed I raped her. But it was consensual. That is the truth.”
Alla som anklagas för sexuella övergrepp, våldtäkt och andra sexbrott är inte skyldiga. Och det är rättsväsendet som ska utreda och avgöra om anklagelserna ska leda till ett åtal mot den anklagade.
Oskyldig tills motsatsen bevisats gäller även dessa män som anklagas för sexbrott.
Fyllesex är inte alltid våldtäkt, även om vissa vill att kvinnan frias från ansvar för sin sexualitet och val hon gör när hon är berusad. Det sexuella umgänge som hänt under berusning ska klassas som våldtäkt med mannen som ensam ansvarig och skyldig.
